The 11th grade capstone project is to plan and execute FATE In Our Stars, originally named by our 2020 cohort. After much work on developing creative marketing and fundraising strategies to increase attendance and raise more money for scholarships at the 2020 FATE In Our Stars, the 11th graders were faced with the decision to transition the event from in-person, to virtual.
In the face of a challenge, our 11th graders persevered and worked to adapt FATE In Our Stars to an online celebrity fundraising challenge in June 2020. In a head-to-head battle, The Comets took on The Stars to see which team could raise the most money for college scholarships! In addition to the fundraising challenge, FATE students participated in live segments with celebrity guests to keep our audience engaged. Segments included:
- “Pop the Trunk” with Jalen Rose & FATE Student D’Mauri
- “A conversation with Langston Galloway” & FATE Student Delano
- “YouTube & Natural Hair Tips” with @Nae2Curly & FATE Student Serraya
- “@thekitchenista cooks” with FATE Student Teyon
The day also culminated with a special spoken word performance by our 11th graders written by our very own FATE Student Chantell in collaboration with artist Mike Ellison. In the end, our students and celebrity participants helped raise over $50,000 for college scholarships!!
